Silverton, Broken Hill & a huge Park Bench!

Thursday, October 21, 2010
Drove out to Silverton, 25 km NW of Broken Hill to look at the buildings & landscapes which have featured in many films & advertisments. Silverton developed as a mining town inthe 1880's. In 1883 with a population of about 250 it got it's PO. Within 2 yrs the population had grown to 3,000. However, by 1899, as bigger mines developed in Broken Hill, people moved on & many took their houses with them, transported th Broken Hill by bullock carts.  to learn more about the history of Silverton & see the list of films made at Silverton go to http://www.silverton.org.au/ . Filming of the next Mad Max movie have been postponed because the countryside is too green - they need it to look like a desert!

We were a bit late getting there this morning so the light for photos was a bit harsh & it was also a bit hot, but it was an interesting place & the museum housed in the old gaol has so much stuff!! Took a few photos for my sewing friends and some for my Medical Imaging friends!

Silverton, NSW: Spare X-ray table in museum if anyone needs one!
Lunch & quiet time back at van then into town for look at the Mining Museum which houses the Silver Tree, a really beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Then drove up to the top of the waste heap, right in the town of Broken Hill, to the Broken Earth Cafe/Restaurant - great views over the town & nice iced coffee, but very expensive! On of the town sculptures is also on top of the hill near the cafe. Called "Park Bench" it is built to a scale which makes adults feel like children at a normal size park bench!  I was taking a photo of  John when another couple offered to take photo of both of us! Of course we then took photo of them!
