Last day in the Flinders Ranges, SA ... till next time!

Sunday, October 17, 2010
Our last day at 'Rawnsley Park Station' & last chance to see more of this magnificent area in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.
Woke to sunshine & thought today we would be able to drive to more areas.  But, a walk up to the office to check on road closures quickly dispelled that idea! Most of the unsealed roads were still closed :-( .
So we went for a short drive into the Wilpena Pound NP headquarters to see what walks they had open, however, by this time the cloud was building up again, lunch-time was approaching & the shortest walk was about 2 hrs!
Strolled into the nearby caravan park area to check it out for next time - have decided we will just have to come back again when we are fitter & can do the longer walks & hopefully the weather will be kinder! Stopped at a few places along the way as we returned to van for lunch, reading, resting etc.

Wilpena Pound, SA: Pink Poppy's growing wild among the blue Patterson's Curse flowers; Grey Kangaroo;
Red Capped Robin; Poppy with bee; Nankeen Kestrel; Rawnsely Bluff
On one of the lookouts we found a good explanation of the geological development of Wilpena Pound. Have included the photos here, hope you can read them.

Did one of the short walks from the Park to Twidale Hill later in the afternoon, before showering & getting a little bit 'dressed up' for dinner at the Woolshed Restaurant on Rawnsley Station, about 8 mins drive from the caravan park. Check out the restaurant at http://www.woolshedrestaurant.com.au/
Had the most delicious dinner of fresh SA Herrings, butterflied & stuffed with red salmon, served on bed of rice with tomato & mango salsa, a glass of Dusty Dog Chardonnay & home made desserts- Heather, Lemon Delicious & John, Chocolate Mousse. Service & venue were great! ... and no cooking or washing up!
